The “World's Hottest” Tri-Fold Screen
Author:
Recently, Time, the prestigious American magazine, announced its list of the Best Inventions of 2024. Huawei's Mate XT Extraordinary Master earned a place on the list, winning the award for Most Innovative Consumer Electronics Product of the Year. Time praised it highly, stating, "Huawei has outpaced global competitors to become the first to launch a tri-fold phone."
Now, let’s take a look at the "hottest" tri-fold screen technology available today.
01 Technology – Multi-Layer Film Stacking
When the screen folds outward, the surface layers primarily experience tensile stress; when it folds inward, they face compressive stress. To ensure stability and prevent internal film layers from shifting under different types of stress, LCD manufacturers have developed a unique multi-layer film stacking structure and introduced the concept of a "neutral layer."
From a structural mechanics perspective, the "neutral layer" balances tensile and compressive stresses, significantly reducing stress during folding. This minimizes deformation, prevents warping, and leads to lighter creasing on the screen.
02 Technology – Waterdrop Fold
The essence of foldable screen lies in the folding itself. To enable flexible screen to balance stress more effectively and fold with minimal trace of creases, manufacturers have pioneered a unique waterdrop-shaped folding design.
With a broader bending radius, the waterdrop fold creates a more natural curve, resulting in lighter creases and effectively reducing screen wear. This innovation also extends the screen’s lifespan, enabling some foldable screens from certain smartphone brands to withstand nearly a million folds.
03 Technology – Ultra-Thin Flexible Cover Glass
Currently, most flexible or foldable screens on the market use CPI (transparent polyimide) as cover material. After extensive testing, the tri-fold screen now adopts UTG (ultra-thin flexible cover glass) to replace conventional CPI, enhancing overall screen flatness, reducing crease visibility, improving weather resistance, extending lifespan, and preventing the yellowing that can occur at high temperatures.
Furthermore, an innovative ultra-light CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced plastic) material replaces conventional titanium alloy supports. This upgrade significantly enhances support strength while reducing weight, contributing to a more portable, lightweight, and slim end product.
